MSN Responds to Privacy Concerns

The MSN Search Blog has responded to speculation about the actual data that they released to the government. They have clarified what was handed over as the following:

  • How frequently some query terms occurred.
  • The government CANNOT look up an IP and see what they queried.
  • The government CANNOT look for users who queried for both “TERM A” and “TERM B”.

Basically, the data that they can see would be the equivalent of the Overture Keyowrd Search tool and the AdWords related tools which are publically available to anyone using those advertising programs. I think that the scope of this data is fine; however, one must always worry about the slippery slope of the legal system.
